POLICE PRACTICES AND PROCEDURES

Due to the complexities of today's legal system, I accept and review cases only from attorneys or paralegal assistants.

Services:

Evaluation and opinion of police practices and procedures based on experience, and nationally accepted Law Enforcement Accreditation Standards.

Crime scene examination and evaluation.

Review of law enforcement investigative procedures, collection and preservation of evidence procedures, and proper interview & interrogation techniques.

Review of actions by law enforcement personnel resulting in death or serious injury.

Review of Police Management practices and procedures.

Experience:

W. T. Gaut, PhD has some 30 years experience in the Criminal Justice arena. His Law enforcement career includes 25 years with the Birmingham Police Department, a major department with over 1,000 sworn officers and support personnel. His police experience includes virtually every aspect of assignment including Street Patrol, Detective, Detective Sergeant, Lieutenant, Detective Lieutenant, Patrol Division Captain, Precinct Commander, and Captain of the Detective Division.

As 1st Sergeant, he was a State certified Police Academy Instructor where he was responsible for the training of police recruits in the fundamentals of police practices and procedures. During the course of his Academy assignment, W. T. Gaut, PhD also participated as an advisor to the State of Alabama during the formulation and implementation of the State of Alabama Minimum Standards and Training for Police Officers. As his career progressed, he continued to teach investigative fundamentals to newly promoted detectives, and ultimately Police Management skills to newly promoted Mid & Upper Management Officers.

As a Lieutenant assigned to the Chief's Administrative Staff. W. T. Gaut, PhD coordinated the activities resulting in compliance with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. As a result, the Birmingham Police Department became a nationally accredited agency. He is thoroughly familiar with those accreditation standards and maintains up to date knowledge on those Standards as they evolve.
